Mediamat is part of the group of businesses owned by Scots entrepreneur Thomas Ashdown (Jobs in Letting — Scotland's dedicated recruitment agency for jobs in residential letting, Cityoffices — for office space search). For 6 years, it has been supplying mousemats to local Universities on an ad hoc basis using spare capacity space to promote voluntary organisations such as the Scottish SPCA.

The decision to commercialise the product was taken in early 2007 when it became obvious that the desired effect of promoting brands could be achieved with relatively small adverts, the size very much compensated for by the longevity of exposure. Our not for profit roots however have not only been maintained but have grown with each mat now promoting no less than 6 charitable organisations.
